Nel Jayaraman is a social crusader, who has dedicated his life to restore the seeds of our traditional rice varieties that have been long forgotten and disappeared in the course of time. As a single man army, Nel Jayaraman has so far restored around 174 varieties of traditional rice.
He has sown the seeds of his legacy by establishing 'Nel Jayaraman Traditional Rice Conservation Center. His followers and his students continue to keep the fire lit by Jayaraman, unextinguished.
This movement cultivates, conserves and reproduces traditional rice varieties and provides them free of cost to farmers, Department of Agriculture, agricultural students, trainers and researchers.
On 12/06/2023, the representatives of 'Nel Jayaraman Traditional Rice Conservation Center, met MNM Chief Dr. Kamal haasan on 12/06/2023, The President of Makkal Needhi Maiam, reiterated the importance of reviving our history, which has been purposely distorted.
Our agriculture and food habits have an undeniable place in the tradition, culture and history of Tamils. While we are on a journey to revive our History, it is also important to revive our traditional agriculture, grains and water bodies. .I sincerely feel it is my responsibility as a citizen. I recently heard about the "Oorkinaru Rehabilitation Movement". I immediately connected with them and met them. I offered my support and participation. I want to be a part of any kind of an initiative that is aimed at bringing in a social change. All your efforts to preserve and popularize traditional rice varieties are commendable. I will do all I can to be a part of this," he said.
" I have always had a keen interest in Organic agriculture, subsistence economy, conventional agriculture, small grains, traditional rice varieties, national succession, watershed restoration, and development of villages.
Anyone who cares about the Tamil land should participate in the 'National Paddy Festival - 2023' organized by them on the 17th and 18th of June. Mr. Kamal Haasan also requested the society to support the efforts of these young people to preserve the tradition.

Arunachalam, State Coordinator of Nel Jayaraman Traditional Rice Conservation Center Rajiv, High Level Committee Chairman Bandanallur Asokan, High Level Committee Member Nannilam Udayakumar were also present. Along with them more than twenty organic farmers met Mr. Kamal Haasan and added to the highly important conversation.
